FEBRUARY 2019

Design

Can't quite believe February has flown past, but it's been the perfect time to reflect on a whirlwind few months towards the end of last year and start using the experiences gained for planned projects coming up in the months ahead...

I had the pleasure to be a resident artist at a school in Birmingham in December 2018 for one of the most rewarding collaborations I've had the pleasure of being a part of.

As part of the 1 year anniversary of Echo Eternal -  an amazing commemorative arts, media and civic engagement project - and to coincide with Holocaust Memorial Day, the occasion was marked at Birmingham Town Hall on Monday 28th January.  Specially commissioned music by Julian Lloyd Webber and the  Birmingham Conservatoire made its debut, with the students from the 6 Acadamies and 6 schools involved performing  their "echoes" alongside the professional musicians.

Broadcaster Natasha Kaplinsky interviewed 112 Holocaust survivors for the programme and students from a dozen schools in B'ham worked with various artists, including myself to produce creative responses to the powerful testimonies that were "gifted" to the schools involved.

I also had the pleasure of working with VYKA film-makers to create a short film, creating a permanenet record of the artistic response and capturing the pledges vowed by them also. The production by Nishkam School and the other schools involved can be viewed here -

There was also a special exhibtion at Birmingham Library for the duration of Jan 2019 to showcase the student's work thtat was produced during my residency with them.

I'm incredibly proud of their achievements, reverence, dedication and progress throughout my time with them and it remains to date one of my most memorable and humbling collaborations to date.

The designs created included mini canvases, lampshades (inspired by the museum in Riga) and a contemporary chair covering, inspired by a traditional patchwork quilt.  The range of materials, techniques and application methods shared and developed in such a short period of time was truly remarkable by the students!
